Biology is clear that at conception, also known as fertilization, a unique organism comes into existence. Since this new life possesses human DNA and is the offspring of human parents, it can only legitimately be described as human life. These are clear signs of life.
Since there is no question that human zygotes, embryos and fetuses are alive, some have attempted to claim that human beings are not "persons" until some threshold is crossed, such as viability, the capacity to feel pain, birth, or even the first year after birth. The merits of such notions could be debated, but it should be clear that they are not based on science but rather on ideology, philosophy, or belief. As far as observable science is concerned, human life begins at conception. A sign of basic pro life thinking.
What politicians on both sides of the debate generally fail to acknowledge is the religious nature of the conflict.
If one believes in an immortal soul that is implanted at the moment of conception, and if person hood is determined by the presence of that immortal soul, then there is little difference, in effect, between terminating a week-old pregnancy or killing a living, breathing person. Rational members of the pro-life movement do acknowledge that there is a difference in intent--abortion would be, at worst, involuntary manslaughter rather than murder--but the consequences, i.e. the death of a human person, are regarded by pro-lifers in much the same way.

Hiding behind a hollow executive order signed by President Obama (which, as Johnson points out, even "the president of Planned Parenthood accurately dismissed as 'a symbolic gesture'), two organizations in particular - Democrats for Life of America (DFLA) and Catholics United - attempted to provide political cover for a group of Democrat "pro-life" lawmakers who flip-flopped and provided the votes that allowed the law to be enacted without effective pro-life language. As Johnson writes, the electorate was not fooled: "The bloc of Democrats who abandoned the pro-life movement to satisfy President Obama and Speaker Pelosi suffered severe losses. In all, at least a dozen House incumbents who had taken high-profile stands against federal funding of abortion, but who ended up voting for the health care law, were defeated by pro-life challengers (or, in Stupak's case, suddenly retired)." He also notes that, "[f]ar greater losses were sustained among the ranks of House Democrats who had seldom or never voted pro-life: upwards of 40 were replaced by firmly pro-life Republicans."
