What Does the Bible Say About Abortion in the New Testament and Old Testament?

The Bible has plenty to say about the abortion in the New Testament and in the Old Testament. Out of more than 600 laws of Moses, several comments on murder, which abortion is the taking of life. If a woman has a miscarriage as the result of a fight, the man who caused it should be fined, as the judges determine. If the woman dies, however, the culprit could be killed in the Old Testament. This is not a new teaching but traditional teaching on abortions.

The Bible says - "If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

"And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth . . ."--Ex. 21:22-25

Looking at Old Testament Bible law from a proper cultural and historical context, it is evident that the life of the unborn is put on the same par as the person outside the womb.

When understood as a reference to miscarriage, the Bible in Exodus 21:22-25 is sometimes used as evidence that the unborn is subhuman. But a proper understanding of the passage shows reference is not to a miscarriage, but to a premature birth, and that the injury referred to, which is to be compensated for like all other injuries, applies to the child as well as to his mother. This means that, "far from justifying permissive abortion, in fact grants the unborn child a status in the eyes of the law equal to the mother's.

The most significant thing about abortion legislation in Biblical law is that there is none. It was so unthinkable that an Israelite woman should desire an abortion that there was no need to mention this offense in the criminal code." [6] All that was necessary to prohibit an abortion was the command, "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13). Every Israelite knew that the preborn child was indeed a child. Therefore, miscarriage was always viewed as the loss of a child and abortion as the killing of a child. Looking at Old Testament law from a proper cultural and historical context, it is evident that the life of the unborn is put on the same par as the person outside the womb.

Another among the Bible verses on abortion is Luke 1:15, which states that John the Baptist will be "filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb", meaning that the baby in the womb has a soul for the Holy Spirit to fill.

Christians and Abortion Issue

What should Christians believe concerning abortion?
Abortion activists often attempt heroic acrobatics in logic to try to dismiss these Christian Bible verses, which indicate that abortion kills babies whom God "formed", "sanctified" and "made" in the womb and in whom the Holy Spirit may already reside, and is therefore a murderous rebellion against God. This is common Christian teaching.

A point of contention between pro-choice and pro-life groups is the beginning of life. When does it begin? Christians believe that life begins at the moment of conception.

For God knows all hearts and he sees you. He keeps watch over your souls, and he knows you know. And he will judge all people according to what they have done." (NLT)

Proverbs 6:16-17 says that God HATES those who shed innocent blood! Deuteronomy 27:25 says, "Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen."

Who could possibly be more innocent than an unborn baby?! Yet, our society has become so wicked that it condones the slaying of 1.5 million innocent children every year. The Bible says that God HATES people who do this.
